The Art curriculum is sequenced to build pupils practical skills alongside a critical understanding of both contemporary and historical Art references.
Each project from year 7 onwards contains both new learning and prior learning to ensure that these component skills and ideas are embedded in the pupils long term memory. Importantly pupil’s learn through participation, making, creating and developing independent thoughts and opinions.
The KS3 curriculum is devised to show the breadth of Art that is possible referencing, textiles, 3D design and fine Art. The diverse nature of the course allows pupils to successfully transition to the project based work that comprise the AQA Art and Design assessment criteria.
The curriculum is led by all pupils learning through making and finding personal and meaningful ways to express their ideas.
How we connect the knowledge over the key stages (deliberate connections):
We use the KS3 national Art and Design curriculum to support the project work that is implemented. The focus is placed on building pupil's confidence through creating outcomes, supported by strong foundational skills in drawing, painting, presentation, fine motor skills and research. Pupils are responsible for their sketchbooks and complete homework tasks each week to further advance their in lesson learning. We study a range of artists, art movements and cultural references to support medium experimentation and personal exploration.
How we make our subject knowledge stick:
We use a range of strategies to do this;
Subject specific knowledge is re-visited throughout KS3, each term a new project is started and built over the term, allowing skills and themes to be re-visited and applied in different ways. Learning through doing and medium experimentation is a fundamental part of all Art lessons. This ethos is continued into KS4.
The nature of recording in sketchbooks both visually and through written annotation provides well established reference points for long term recall of techniques and processes.
Learning journeys are used to record pupil progress and feedback and offer a central reference for schemes of learning each term.

The Art curriculum is fast paced and ambitious for all. Personal sketchbooks are given to pupils to promote pride and responsibility in their work. Through subject specialist teachers scaffolding is provide for tasks through visual demonstrations and exemplars in addition to one to one support during all lessons.
An emphasis is placed on giving everything a try, which sees all pupils successfully engaging with the curriculum and individual project activities.

Our Curriculum
The aim of the Arts curriculum is to foster and hone students’ passions for their art with open minds in order to enjoy engaging with the arts throughout life.
In KS3 the emphasis is placed on developing and mastering a wide range of skills within different art mediums. This is explored through both practical and theory elements. This continues for pupils into KS4 where pupils have more of a choice to explore the areas they would like to develop within independent project work building on the foundational skills taught at KS3.
Transition & Building on KS2 / KS3
CCC has worked closely with our primary partners during 2021/22. We have shared knowledge on the curriculum intents at key stage two and key stage three to enhance student transition and the sequencing of learning.
Key Stage 3
Key Stage 3 we aim to offer a varied Art education exposing pupils to different art movements, cultures and techniques. Pupils will learn key skills such as drawing, painting, proportion, clay, textiles and colour theory. Project work conducted in sketchbooks in addition to the key skills equips pupils with the skills needed to progress onto study Art at KS4. Pupils will learn important skills in research,analysis and evaluation. Peer and self assessment is built into the Art curriculum to encourage self reflection, positive feedback and refinement of ideas. As each project progresses in years 7,8,9, pupils gain confidence to make independent choices that feed into resolved pieces outside of their sketchbooks.
Throughout each project pupils will be asked to create a homework page, each week. Pupils will be asked to collect information, images and complete practical tasks relating to the topic that term.
Key Stage 4
Study of the GCSE Art content begins in year 10. Pupils undertake a series of four projects during this time that continue to develop each individual's personal visual language. GCSE provides pupils with the space to express their ideas visually, exploring different themes and mediums to challenge and progress their Art skills.
Each project follows a similar format pupils are issued with a theme, a series of teacher-led workshops in painting, drawing and research start the project to refresh and embed key skills. Pupils then choose their own areas of focus both thematically and through visual outcomes.
Pupils are assessed throughout the two year course in line with the AQA exam specification AO1,2,3,4 to develop, record, refine and present. Learning journeys are used to record progress and teacher feedback during all projects.
Coursework forms 60% of the final assessment grade and the final 40% is completed in the ESA assignment set by the examining board.

Curriculum Impact- How we measure attainment and progress:
In Art, assessment happens in many ways. Learning journeys are used as a visual aid to record pupils progress and set targets throughout each project.
Teacher feedback is given twice a term and both peer and self assessment is implemented to encourage self reflection at regular intervals during the term.
Pupils are given a grade in line with the schools reporting system at KS3 and a GCSE grades are used in KS4, in addition to a behaviour and effort grades specific to Art.
How do we enrich our subject outside the classroom?
In Art extra curricular activities are vital. KS4 pupils are offered an additional 3 hours in the Art room each week this time is allocated to support them with their coursework and allow access to the subject specific resources that are needed. At KS3 a series of after school projects happen throughout the year supporting wider school and community events.
Art can be seen around the school site providing pupils with a sense of pride and fulfilment as their work is celebrated and seen by the wider school community.
